Connecting the Bernafon/Oticon TV Adapter (for LG Televisions)

Connecting the Bernafon/Oticon TV Adapter (for LG Televisions) Print

Most modern LG televisions will have an optical digital audio out port. It looks like this:

Some higher-end models will have the port look more like a star:

Either one of these ports will work with the TV adapter. If the TV lacks either port, then it is incompatible with the TV adapter, and will require an external accessory called an HDMI Audio Extractor Box: see this article for details.

STEP 1 - Turn on the TV Adapter:

Make sure the TV Adapter is powered on. On the front of the box, if the indicator lights show two blue lights that slowly fade in and out, the TV Adapter is waiting for a hearing aid pairing: consult this article for pairing instructions. If the indicator lights show a single red light, the TV Adapter is waiting for an audio signal, and you may proceed.

STEP 2 - Plug in the optical cable to the TV:

Insert the optical cable to the TV. If there is a cover over the port, simply push the plug through it.

  • The included cable may have a plastic cover at the tips of both plugs. Please remove them before inserting.

  • The regular optical digital audio out port is keyed, so the orientation of the plug matters. If it doesn’t fit, rotate the plug and try again.

  • For televisions with the star-shaped port, the orientation of the plug doesn’t matter. However, it may require a little bit more force to completely insert the plug into the port.

STEP 3 - Check for a signal:

Take a look at the other end of the cable to see if there is a red light emitting from the tip of the plug. This is an infrared light, not a laser, so don’t worry about any eye exposure. If you see the red light, skip to step 5.

STEP 4 - Enable the optical output:

LG televisions don’t have the optical output enabled by default. You will need to go into the television’s SOUND OUT menu, which is located in the sound settings. Enable it there. If done successfully, the red light should emit from the tip of the other plug.

  • This varies by model. For current 2025 and 2026 models, you may use this video as a guide:

  • There will be an option to either enable just the optical output, or enable internal TV speaker + optical output. Choose the latter if others are watching along with the hearig aid user.

STEP 5 - Plug in the optical cable to the TV Adapter:

Insert the other plug into the pink port of the TV Adapter, which is also labeled “IN”. If successful, the red indicator light on the TV Adapter should change to one green and one blue light.

STEP 6 - Select the TV Adapter program:

Note that the TV Adapter isn’t automatic; the hearing aid user must switch to the TV Adapter program. Two musical beeps in the hearing aid will indicate a successful switch. This may be done via one of several methods:

  • Smartphone App (Bernafon App/Oticon Companion): In the Sound menu, swipe left or right on the current program, which is labeled “General” by default, until the “TV Adapter/EduMic” program is selected.

  • Remote Control: Press the third button with a raised bump.

  • ConnectClip/SoundClip: Press and hold volume up (+ button) for 3 seconds.

  • Physical button on the hearing aid: Press and hold for 1 second. If there are two buttons on the hearing aid, press the top one. As this button is very small, we only recommend this method if the hearing aid user is easily able to manipulate it. If they are having difficulty with this method, please contact one of our clinics to order the Remote Control accessory.

TROUBLESHOOTING

  • Double voice or echo with internal TV speaker enabled: Unfortunately, the internal TV speaker may not be in perfect sync with the TV Adapter. The only way to correct this is to attach an external speaker, such as a soundbar, to the TV Adapter.

  • No sound or blinking red light: Check the TV settings to make sure that the digital audio output format is set to PCM Stereo. It will not accept a Dolby Digital or Surround 5.1 channel signal.
